The Bennington House
Drawing from the tradition of Victorian Architecture, The Bennington House opened in August 2002 and is a worthy addition to Newport's Historic Nye Beach. The Bennington vacation home builds upon many of the features that both the Applegate and Wakefield Houses incorporate. It completes the three home project of side-by-side Queen Anne Victorians the build-design, husband-wife team had been working on these past four years. The original intent of emulating a San Francisco street scape has been accomplished.
The Bennington House draws again from the Queen Anne period of American Architecture with specific inspiration from homes found in the Port Townsend area of Washington State.
The visitor is first struck with the level of architectural detail and trim work that has gone into the construction and development of the exterior. From the raised panel bay windows to the pillars that rise on either side of each opening; that are capped with extensive crown and dentil detail. One can immediately sense that this will be no ordinary vacation rental.
The large two story bay window is the visual anchor of the west facade. With crown moldings both inside and out and ornate shingle exterior, the entire west face makes for an impressive streetscape.
Upon entering the home the guest is greeted first by the slate floors that run the length of the hallway and nine foot ceilings that are found throughout the first floor. The built-up crown moldings and ornate base moldings are worthy of the finest Victorian homes of the Queen Anne period.
The owners have continued, as in their previous homes, to place two bedrooms on the first floor. The large master bedroom with its attractive queen sized bed and captivating furnishings as well as delightful linen, comforters, and pillows, will award the guest with a comfortable place to sleep or just lie about and enjoy some quality time.
A comfortable second bedroom has three single beds for those of you traveling with kids or business groups or with just those bridge playing, book reading women's groups that find our homes so attractive.
A full bathroom with pedestal sink and period furnishings as well as a full-sized washer/dryer can also be found on the first floor.
The last room on the first floor is the Garden Room. This room has a queen sized bed, but what sets it off is the presence of the surrounding enclosed garden and deck area which also features a hot tub.
The upstairs in the large open space with its full west wall of ocean facing glass, houses the living room, dining area, kitchen, and a small reading nook. With its ten foot ceilings and expansive entertainment center featuring a gas fireplace, stereo and large TV, the guest can either while away the hours gazing at the sea or turn and visit with friends and family in the comfortable surroundings.
This floor also contains a fourth bedroom with queen sized bed and a full bathroom with pedestal sink and shower.
Bennington House is located directly across the street from Newport's Performing Arts Center and one block from the Vietnam Memorial Park which has quickly become the most comfortable beach entry in Nye Beach. Bennington House is located right next door to both the Applegate and Wakefield homes and at the opposite end of the block from the Fairhaven House.
